Lombok, Bali's neighbor to the east, is a quiet island of uncrowded beaches dominated by the spectacular volcano of Mt Rinjani. Lombok has verdant valleys and vast arid regions providing great contrast in scenery. Much less crowded than Bali, Lombok is an excellent choice for travelers seeking peaceful more secluded beaches. Lombok can be reached by air from Bali or by first class ferry (2 1/2 hours) or by slower local ferries.
Northwest of Lombok are three small islands - Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Terawangan - each with superb white sand beaches, clear water, coral reefs and brilliantly colored fish.. These islands are the best areas sites for snorkeling and diving in Lombok. These islands can be reached in 10 to 15 minutes by outrigger boat from Bangsal harbor. The only means of transport in these islands are carts towed by ponies.
